Baidu Overtakes Google For Second Place In The Smart Speaker Market

Google is no longer the second-largest smart speaker manufacturer in the world. As per to a new report posted by Canalys, China’s Baidu now claims that title. The firm crossed Google due to a solid Q2 in which it increased shipments of smart speaker by 3,700% as compared to previous year. The feat is specifically impressive considering that Baidu was efficiently a non-entity in the sector a year back with shipments of just 0.1 million units.

A terrible performance by Google additionally assisted Baidu. The firm exported 4.3 Million Nest-branded and Home hardware in Q2 this year, down from 5.4 Million last year during the same period. The drop in shipments shows a 19.8% decline as compared to last year for Google.

Particularly, out of the 5 major firms comprised in the report, only Google shipped fewer devices as compared to what it did previous year. Seeing at Xiaomi numbers (the next worst company on the list) shows just how poorly the search behemoth did this previous quarter. Xiaomi elevated shipments of its smart devices by 37.5% as compared to previous year.

On a related note, Samsung earlier claimed that it is supposedly aiming for an affordable edition of its Galaxy Home smart speaker fueled by Bixby—its voice assistant. While the specs of the new device are not yet recognized it might have fewer of the functions of the main Galaxy Home that the firm declared in August 2018, the media claimed.

While the premium Galaxy Home device, which is still to arrive in the, can view with Apple HomePod, which has a price tag of $349, the mini Bixby-fueled device can take on Amazon Echo and Google Home which have a price tag of less than $200. The mini Bixby device may have fewer microphones as compared to the Galaxy Home and maybe would miss a subwoofer.
